Thought For The Day – Understanding
To listen is to hear the words that are said. To understand is to hear those that aren’t. – Will Nesbitt
Communication is transference of meaning, be it verbally or non-verbally. Words are merely sounds and symbols – vehicles used to carry meaning to the reader/hearer. Words are not always necessary, for much can be said even in silence. Often times we miss what is being said because we either focus too much on our response to what is being said or only on the actual words that are being spoken to the point where we sometimes miss what is really being said.
When listening to others – and even ourselves – don’t just hear what is said. Go beyond the words and feel for meaning. When we feel for meaning, no amount of words, eloquent or otherwise, nor deafening silence can keep us from understanding what is really being said. Understanding – comprehension of meaning – is the prize in all communication. It is when and where we connect. And it is when and where true communication is accomplished.
Take care. Peace.
